Princeton car crash kills rabbi, leaves two injured

The Times of Trenton reports that a high-speed car accident last week killed the retired director of Princeton University's Center for Jewish Life.

The 74-year-old rabbi was killed in a violent chain reaction collision, as he was getting into the passenger seat of a parked car.

Law enforcement officials say a speeding BMW driven by a 20-year-old man was careening down Riverside Drive in Princeton shortly before 10 last Thursday morning. The BMW slammed into a parked and unoccupied Toyota Camry.

The BMW was going so fast, it pushed the Camry about 500 feet down the road, and then the BMW collided with a Toyota Prius -- the car the retired rabbi was getting into at the moment of impact.

The rabbi was thrown from the vehicle and found on the ground by emergency medical personnel a short while later. He was unresponsive, they said, and lifesaving measures were not successful.

A 63-year-old man in the driver's seat of the Prius was taken to Trenton's Capital Health Regional Medical Center, as was the driver of the BMW.

Both were listed in stable condition.

The Prius was hit with such force by the BMW that the Toyota was pushed down the street and across the road and into a tree.

Police later said the BMW was going at "an extremely high rate of speed" before the crash in front of Riverside Elementary School.

Police said they don't know of any medical condition the driver might have had that caused the crash. He was later charged with death by auto.

In these kinds of cases, it's important that a family that loses a loved one, and that those who suffer accident injuries, are able to hold the responsible person accountable.
