6 people hurt in South Jersey crash

Five members of a New Jersey high school soccer team were injured in a multi-vehicle crash in Hamilton Township on the morning of Aug. 30. The girls, each of them between 14 and 18 years old, had been on their way to a charity game at the time of the crash.

According to police, the accident happened at approximately 8:45 a.m. when an eastbound pickup truck crossed into the westbound lane of Route 40 near Pittsburgh Avenue. The pickup truck, driven by a 39-year-old Vineland man, slammed into a box truck, which in turn crashed into a Volkswagen Jetta carrying five members of Mainland Regional High School's girls' soccer team.

The driver of the Jetta, an 18-year-old high school senior, suffered injuries that were described as moderate to severe. One of her passengers, a 14-year-old girl, was seriously injured and transported by helicopter to AtlantiCare Medical Center where she was placed on life support. The three other passengers in the Jetta were evaluated by medical staff and released. The driver of the box truck, a 48-year-old man, also suffered injuries in the crash and was hospitalized for observation.

After the initial collision, the pickup truck continued off the road, before hitting some trees and catching fire, according to police. Its driver was not injured. Route 40 was closed for investigation for approximately two hours following the crash. No arrests were immediately made; law enforcement officials said the investigation was ongoing.

In a case like this, where multiple people suffer injury in a single car accident, a personal injury attorney may be able to help the victims secure compensation for medical expenses and pain and suffering. Negotiations with insurers are often particularly important where more than one person is injured because insurance policies often have per person and per incident limits that apply.
