New Jersey taxis trying to evade responsibility after car accidents

If you've been injured in a car accident involving a New Jersey taxi cab, don't be surprised if the cab company tries to swerve around its legal responsibilities, The Record reports.

The newspaper notes that a Paterson woman was badly injured when she was run over by a cab -- and then the cab backed up and ran over her again. She received a $785,000 judgment against the cab company, but she and her attorney believe the company might avoid paying up because the state's liability insurance mandates for taxi cab companies is dangerously inadequate.

State law requires a mere $35,000 of liability coverage for taxis.

For many cab accident injury victims, that figure will not come close to covering medical bills or making up for their lost wages or diminished earning capacity.

Consider the Paterson woman: she was crossing a street on Valentine's Day of 2010 when the cab hit her. She has since had skin grafts and a number of orthopedic surgeries, with more to come.

"I want justice for what has happened," she told The Record.

Her attorney said his law firm has witnessed "countless incidents in which the amount of insurance coverage on a taxi cab did not adequately compensate the injured victim."

He recalled a case in which a woman standing on a sidewalk was knocked through a business window and another case in which a girl, just eight years old, went through a windshield; in both cases, he said, the injury victims were unjustly undercompensated.

He said that in the case of the Paterson woman, his firm is "going after the assets of the cab company to try and make this victim whole again."

In these cases -- and in other car accident cases -- an accident injury victim should speak to an experienced, knowledgeable attorney who can advise them of their legal options and help them make informed decisions.
