Rider University student, Ewing woman face hit-and-run charges

A Ewing woman, 53, and a Rider University student, 20, are both facing charges that they separately hit a man crossing a Ewing street and fled the scene.

The man later died of his injuries sustained in the car accidents. The two women were later arrested following the October 2011 incidents.

The 54-year-old victim was hit at about 10:40 at night, first by the student's silver Jeep and then by the other woman's BMW.

According to accounts at the time, the student briefly stopped her vehicle after it struck the man on Parkside Avenue, opened a door and then sped off.

The two suspects recently appeared in court asking for a delay in the proceedings so that they can have more time to examine evidence in the case.

After the two car crashes, the student surrendered to authorities five days later. The other woman was arrested the following day.

Authorities have no way of determining if either woman was impaired while driving.

Law enforcement officials expect to increase patrols looking for drunken drivers this weekend in Trenton and across Mercer County. That's because the Super Bowl is this Sunday; an event that invariably triggers a rise in drunken driving, auto accidents and injuries.

Authorities encourage people who plan to attend a Super Bowl party at a pub or home to appoint a designated driver to ensure that everyone gets home safely.

If you don't have a designated driver, call a sober family member or friend or call a cab.

Anyone injured by an intoxicated driver should contact an attorney experienced in helping accident victims recover damages for medical expenses and lost wages.
