Different drinking habits may be a factor in New Jersey divorce

There are a number of reasons why couples in New Jersey and elsewhere may decide to end their marriage. Some couples may drift apart emotionally, while others may divorce over financial issues that they are unable to resolve. The circumstances behind each divorce are unique. However, a recent study conducted by the University of Buffalo shows another reason why couples may split up. If one spouse drinks more heavily than the other, it increases the likelihood of divorce.

As part of the study, researchers observed married couples for nine years after their wedding. They found that about 50 percent of couples with drastically different drinking habits ended their marriage. Among those with similar drinking habits, only about 30 percent decided to split up. In addition, researchers also concluded that couples who drink heavily are no more likely to get divorced than spouses who are teetotalers.

However, it is not the actual drinking that researchers believe is the problem. The difference in alcohol consumption possibly indicates that the spouses may not be social together. Also, if the spouses have different opinions about drinking, that may also hint at their incompatibility. Incidentally, incompatibility is the second most cited reason for divorce.

Whatever the reasons are for a divorce, New Jersey couples often face an emotional and complex process that may touch on matters of child custody, alimony, child support and asset division. It may be helpful for each spouse to speak to someone who has familiarity with family law matters. Knowing what to expect through each step of the divorce process may help reduce stress and give each spouse some peace of mind during a challenging time.
