New Jersey man charged with drug possession near a school

A 44-year-old man was charged with various drug charges on July 18. He was held on $30,000 bail with a 10 percent cash option after making his first appearance in front of a judge on July 21.

According to the complaint against the man, he allegedly was in possession of three bags of heroin and six bags that contained a substance that was believed to be cocaine. He was suspected of being in possession of those substances within 1,000 feet of School 24 in Jersey City.

It was also reported that the man had summonses for DWI, failing to wear a seatbelt and careless driving. Reports indicate that he has been taken into custody six times in New Jersey for coming into possession of stolen property and for robbery. He has also been taken into custody on two other occasions in New York.

Those who are facing criminal charges may spend time in jail, have to pay a large fine and/or be subject to probation. In some cases, probation may be served after leaving jail or instead of going to jail. Home detention or supervised release may also be part of a sentence even if jail time is not. A criminal law attorney may be able to help dispute a criminal drug charge in court. This may be done by cross-examining witnesses at trial, casting doubt upon the process used to collect evidence against a defendant or asking a judge to have the charges dropped during the trial if the case against that person is not strong enough to proceed.
