2 men charged with drug crimes following traffic stop

In an Aug. 12 report, New Jersey authorities released details about a traffic stop that occurred on July 29 in Hunterdon County that resulted in two men being detained on drug charges. Clinton Township police reportedly received information that the two men would be at a gas station located at the Route 31 and Payne Road intersection with drugs in their possession.

The officers approached the two men who fit the description that they were given after they entered the gas station lot at approximately 11 p.m. They reportedly seized around 100 bags of heroin from the vehicle and took both men into custody. One man was identified as a 28-year-old Trenton resident while the other man was identified as a 28-year-old Lawrenceville resident.

The Trenton man was charged with possession of heroin with intent to distribute the drug and being under the influence of a controlled substance. The second man was charged with similar drug offenses plus a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia; he was released and remained free on his own recognizance. At the time the report was released, the Trenton man was in a county jail with bail set at $25,000.

Those who are being held on a drug charge potentially face serious consequences if convicted, especially if they were believed to be selling the drug. An attorney may be able to help a person in these circumstances avoid the potential consequences. In the event that a traffic stop resulted in the charges, the attorney could examine whether sufficient probable cause was present or ensure that, if the vehicle was searched without consent from the occupants, the officers involved followed the proper procedures. Defendants whose civil rights are violated during a search and seizure could be acquitted or face reduced charges or penalties.
