New Jersey man held on drug and gun charges

A 27-year-old man was taken into custody on July 18 after a raid on a Bridgeton home. Numerous criminal charges are pending, and the man is being held on $100,000 bond. Authorities indicate that they executed a narcotics warrant at the home, and while searching the premises, they allegedly discovered several weapons and ammunition.

In addition to the three handguns discovered, officers reported finding more than 20 bags of heroin as well as drug paraphernalia. The man was taken into custody at the location and transported to a county detention facility. Several weapons charges are pending, including illegal possession of a weapon, prohibited weapons, possession of a weapon for illegal use and concurrent possession of a weapon and controlled substances.

Reports do not indicate whether other individuals were at the scene of the raid or whether others may be involved in the case. Additionally, reports do not note whether the man charged has retained a lawyer. With numerous charges pending, it may be advantageous for the man to enlist the assistance of a criminal defense lawyer to address the charges. At the time he was taken into custody, his Miranda rights should have been read, informing him of his right to secure a lawyer or to have one appointed if he could not afford to hire a lawyer on his own.

While all cases have unique elements, a criminal defense lawyer may examine the execution of the search warrant to verify that the process had been handled legally without infringing on a client's search and seizure rights. In a case involving compelling evidence, a lawyer may recommend seeking an opportunity to reduce charges and penalties by negotiating with prosecutors for a plea deal. A client's prior record may play a role in this process especially if there are no previous serious encounters with the law.
