2 men accused of maintaining heroin mill in New Jersey

On Oct. 30, authorities reported that they raided a home allegedly housing what police described as a heroin mill. Two men who were at the home when the authorities arrived were taken into custody. They were identified as a 30-year-old Hackensack resident and a 29-year-old Haledon resident.

Investigators stated that they had been following the two men who were believed to be involved in the alleged mill for two months before executing search warrants at their residences. Both men were found at a residence located in the 400 block of Hackensack Avenue in Hackensack. Authorities claim that both men were in the process of counting more than $300,000 in cash when they arrived. During the execution of the search warrant, the authorities also claim that they recovered a money counter, a fake driver's license and other identification documents.

Authorities believe that a second residence, located in Closter, was used to prepare heroin for sale. However, it was not believed that the drug was manufactured there. Police say that ink stamps found at the Closer residence were used to mark brand names on heroin batches.

Both individuals were charged with one count of money laundering and one count of maintaining a drug facility. Authorities stated that the men could potentially face additional charges. One of the men is being held on $350,000 bail while the other is being held on $300,000 bail.

There are several defense strategies that can be utilized for those who are facing a drug charge. If, for example, the accused person was taken into custody following the execution of a search warrant, a defense attorney may challenge the legality of the search warrant. They may also look for any discrepancies between the police testimony and the police report. If any issues are found, it is possible that the charges may be reduced or dropped altogether.
